The Tennessee Titans have come to an agreement with Derrick Henry over a four-year deal worth $50 million just hours before Wednesday’s deadline.
Henry had originally signed a Franchise Tag before the start of free agency which would have equated to a one-year deal worth $10.3 million, prior to coming to an agreement over a long-term deal that has now been signed.
The 2019 NFL rushing leader produced the goods in the final weeks of the season as Mike Vrabel’s team went on an impressive run to sneak into the playoffs before ending Tom Brady’s career in New England and then upsetting number one seeds Baltimore Ravens. The Titans eventually bailed out to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship.
Derrick Henry has been quoted on the Titans’ official website as saying:
“I want to stay with the Tennessee Titans.
“They are the ones that took a chance on me – 31 teams passed on me on the draft and they selected me. I have a lot of love for Tennessee. I have a lot of love for everyone in that organization.
“And we have grown from the time I got there. (In 2016) we just missed the playoffs, (in 2017) we got into the playoffs and went into the second round. This year we went to the AFC Championship. We have grown as an organization and as a team and I think that speaks volume for the direction we’re headed.”
Derrick Henry rushed for a league leading 1,540 yards last season, backed up with getting into the endzone 16 times during the regular season. He then trounced Bill Belichick’s Patriots with a 211-yard performance and a passing touchdown in the Wildcard round.
In all during his three postseason games he ran for 377 yards on 64 carries.
Earlier this summer, Titans handed a mega contract to quarterback Ryan Tannehill after half a season as their starter.
