The writing is on the wall for Cameron Carter-Vickers at Tottenham Hotspur. The 23-year-old is still on the books of the North London club despite hardly featuring for them in recent years, but it’s time he seeks a permanent departure for the sake of his career.
Celtic are interested in signing Carter-Vickers when the winter transfer window opens after being impressed by his performances on loan this season, so Parkhead might be where he spends this period of his career. Regardless, it’s not going to be at Tottenham as he’s wasted away for too long.
The US international rose through the youth ranks to Spurs’ first-team in 2016/17 and has gone on to make five appearances in all competitions, featuring just once since 2017. Carter-Vickers has never managed to nail down a regular starting place with the Lilywhites, resulting in him opting for loan moves away to get opportunities.
He’s made 18 appearances for Sheffield United (August 2017 – January 2018), 17 appearances for Ipswich Town (January 2019 – May 2018), 33 appearances for Swansea City (August 2018 – May 2019), 15 appearances for Stoke City (August 2019 – January 2020), 16 appearances for Luton Town (January 2020 – July 2020), 27 appearances for Bournemouth (October 2020 – May 2021) and 23 appearances for Celtic (August 2021 – present)
Carter-Vickers has played for eight clubs in his career without establishing himself at any of them, so it’s time he gives up on his Tottenham dream and gets first-team football elsewhere. The 23-year-old is thriving at Celtic and may be open to turning the move permanent which would suit all parties – the Scottish Premiership side have the option to buy him permanently for £10m.
Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon are preferred at centre-back under Antonio Conte, so Carter-Vickers has little chance of a reprieve at Tottenham. Why stay in North London if you’re deemed surplus to requirements? Why not join a club willing to give you regular playing time?
