82% of PL apps as a substitute, 3 goals in 12 months – Tottenham man could leave [Opinion]

Steven Bergwijn has an uncertain future at Tottenham Hotspur as he’s struggling for playing time under Antonio Conte. The 24-year-old has made 29 appearances in all competitions this season, but he’s amassed only 836 minutes of football across the board, so the writing appears to be on the wall.

Bergwijn joined Spurs on a five-and-a-half-year deal from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020 and has gone on to make 80 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals with 10 assists. The Netherlands international has spent his third season at Tottenham on the bench, however.

He’s started just 4/22 league games this campaign and has made 13 substitute appearances from Tottenham’s last 16 outings. Bergwijn finds himself behind Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Dejan Kulusevski in the pecking order and recently admitted he may have to leave for regular first-team football, so a move could be on the cards.

Reports suggest a return to the Netherlands is likely due to his positive stock in the country, but Tottenham won’t want to make a loss as Bergwijn’s deal has three more years to run. The fact he’s scored just three goals in the last 12 months suggests he won’t have a ton of suitors, however, so Daniel Levy may not get back every penny of the £27m spent.

A move away from Spurs would suit all parties this summer, as Tottenham can reinvest the money they make on a replacement while Bergwijn can join a side willing to make him a regular in the starting lineup. The 24-year-old will need to find his scoring boots again as he netted just one league last season and three the campaign before.

Spurs can’t be blamed for selling Bergwijn as he’s not proven to be prolific enough to warrant starting – Son has 19 goals while Kulusevski has contributed 11 goals, so it’s a no-brainer for Conte.
