Harry Winks has an uncertain future at Tottenham Hotspur after struggling for playing time under Antonio Conte. The 26-year-old has made 28 appearances in all competitions this season, seldom starting games, so he can’t be happy playing a supporting role.
Dan Kilpatrick of the London Evening Standard says Winks is likely ‘to push for a summer exit’ from Tottenham as a result, so this may be his final season in North London. Spurs aren’t going to stand in his way of a departure as Winks isn’t commanding a regular spot in Conte’s side.
The England international rose through the youth ranks to Spurs’ first-team in 2016 and has gone on to make 201 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals with six assists. Winks has fallen down the pecking order in the last two seasons, however, with nine Premier League starts in 2020/21 and nine league starts in 2021/22, so the writing has been on the wall for some time.
Conte has preferred Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur over the 26-year-old, so he’ll have to leave to get first-team football. Winks still has two years remaining on his deal at Tottenham, so the Lilywhites aren’t obligated to cash in quickly for cheap.
Spurs were requesting £40m for Winks last summer but should be more realistic this time. CIES Football Observatory value the midfielder at €10.7m (£9.2m) while Transfermarkt believe his market value to be £15.3m. While surplus to requirements at Tottenham, Winks would improve the squads of a lot of clubs.
He’s doesn’t relinquish possession cheaply, often creates opportunities for the forwards and is adept at turning over the ball. Winks can do it all in the midfield, though he’s more a jack of all trades and master of none. He should have plenty of Premier League interest this summer, nevertheless.
