Manchester United have made an approach for their former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar to become the club’s new director of football, according to Dutch news outlet Voetbal Primeur.
The 51-year-old is currently chief executive of Ajax and it is not the first time that United have registered their interest in van der Sar, having ‘knocked on the door for him’ two years ago, however, the ex-Dutch international was not prepared to leave the Eredivisie giants.
United are said to have made contact with van der Sar last week and Ajax are already making contingency plans for a replacement should he reunite with Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

United have made some decent signings during the transfer window with Anthony and Lisandro Martinez having particularly impressed in recent weeks.
The potential arrival of van der Sar would prove to be a popular appointment among the United fanbase with the keeper having been a hit during his playing career where he won four Premier League titles as well as a Champions League.
