Tim Sherwood has claimed that former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino should take up the vacant post at Aston Villa.

Pochettino has been out of work since being sacked by Paris Saint-Germain in July having won the Ligue 1 title, however, were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid in the round of 16 despite holding a 2-0 aggregate lead at half-time of the second leg.

Pochettino rose to prominence during his time at Tottenham where his high pressing brand of football made him a darling among the north London fanbase.

Aston Villa are on the lookout for a new manager after they announced less than two hours after their 3-0 defeat to Fulham last night that they had parted company with boss Steven Gerrard with immediate effect.

Sherwood, who has also managed Villa, believes that Pochettino should be at the top of their shortlist and given the size of the club, they would be a good fit for the Argentine.

He told talkSPORT‘s breakfast show (9:13am, October 21, 2022): “The top of the list has to be Pochettino, with the style of play and what he did with Tottenham. He is a very good manager.”

The Tottenham boss added: “I don’t think Mauricio goes in there and thinks that he does Aston Villa a favour, not by any means. It’s a huge football club.

“What clubs are out there for Mauricio Pochettino at the moment? I am not sure there are bigger clubs than Aston Villa out there for him. I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for him.”

Whether Pochettino would want to get embroiled in a battle against relegation from the Premier League or instead bide his time for a top European job to arise remains to be seen.

Villa’s owners have proven before they are not afraid to spend big and would likely back Pochettino to the hilt if he decided to make the move to the Midlands.
