Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has confirmed that Joelinton is still being assessed as a result of a knee injury ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Magpies head to north London on the back of Wednesday’s 1-0 victory against Everton which has seen the club sit just two points outside of the top four.

Joelinton was forced off at half-time at St James’ after suffering a knee injury during a challenge in the first half against the Toffees.

Howe revealed there was hope the Brazilian would have been able to run off the knock to the side of his knee, but was unable to continue.

Allan Saint-Maximin suffered a setback from a long-term hamstring injury after making his return against Brentford earlier this month and will once again not be available for selection.

Howe said during his press conference this morning as covered by Football Daily: “He had a knock to the side of his knee. We thought he could run it off but when he said he had to come off at half-time we knew there was potentially an issue there.

“We’re hopeful it’s not serious but at this moment it’s still slightly unclear.”

Joelinton would be a big miss for Newcastle as they look to go to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and continue to prove that they are a threat for any side this season.

Spurs struggled at Manchester United on Wednesday, especially in the midfield area where Erik ten Hag’s side gave them very little time on the ball.  Joelinton’s industry in the middle of the park is something which Howe could do with for this fixture.
