Liverpool are pressing the most to sign Sporting Lisbon defender Goncalo Inacio in the summer transfer window, according to French outlet Le Parisien.
The Merseyside outfit are likely to reinforce multiple positions ahead of next season and a new central defender could be one of the main targets for them.
One of Joe Gomez or Joel Matip could be sold in the summer and manager Jurgen Klopp may prefer to bring in a young centre-back to compete for a starting spot.
Le Parisien now claim that the Reds have moved ahead of Paris Saint-Germain in the race for Inacio and are pressing the most to secure his signature.
They have already started talks to find out the feasibility of the deal but it seems clear that Sporting won’t sell him for less than his €45 million release clause.
Inacio would be a brilliant long-term signing
Liverpool currently have Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate as the first-choice central defenders with Matip and Gomez providing back-up off the bench.
However, they don’t have any left-footed centre-back option in the squad. This could be a priority for Klopp heading into this summer’s transfer window.
In our view, Inacio would be a brilliant long-term signing. The Portuguese is only 21 years of age and has the prime years of his career ahead of him.
This season, the left-footed ace has impressed with a pass accuracy of 90 per cent, registering 1.1 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per game.
The Sporting ace has also won close to four duels per appearance. Meanwhile, he has chipped in with three goals and three assists in all competitions.
Hence, he would be a quality acquisition for Liverpool. For the price quoted, he could be considered as a bargain signing due to his high potential.
