Chelsea open talks to sign Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus

Chelsea have opened talks to sign versatile Ghanaian international attacker Mohammed Kudus from Eredivisie giants Ajax.

The Athletic reports that the Blues have not submitted an official proposal to sign the midfielder, but initial talks have taken place over the possibility of a deal.

Kudus has been linked with a move to the Premier League in the past, with the likes of Everton, Newcastle United, Manchester United, and Arsenal all interested in his services.

However, none of those clubs have made any concrete offers to lure him away from the Johan Cruyff Arena, leaving the door open for Chelsea to swoop in.

The Blues also hold a long-standing interest in Kudus and have been tracking his development for the better part of a year.

A transfer is reportedly not imminent, but The Athletic claims Chelsea are close to reaching an agreement on personal terms with the Ghanaian forward.

Kudus is one of several names Chelsea are considering to bolster their midfield options ahead of next season following a massive clear-out at Stamford Bridge this summer.

The 22-year-old has two years left on his contract with Ajax but is reportedly keen on a summer exit, having rejected a one-year extension from the Amsterdam giants in April.

Ajax are also willing to sanction a transfer, but only if an offer in the region of €40 million arrives for the player who cost them just €9m when he joined in the summer of 2020.

Kudus’ profile fits the kind of player Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino would be keen to have in his squad.

The Ghanaian is a perfect blend of pace, power and trickery while possessing an eye-catching ball-striking ability.

Kudus also has the ability to dominate various roles and positions on the pitch, which has been highly effective for Ajax over the years.

He has played as many as seven positions since making his debut for Ajax, operating in roles ranging from a deep-lying playmaker to a centre-forward.

Kudus is also capable of playing on either side of the attack and as an attacking eight in a 4-3-3 set-up. He could prove a shrewd acquisition for Chelsea, who are severely lacking a player of his profile in their youthful squad.
