Opinion: Klopp getting desperate after report claims Liverpool boss wants Mario Lemina

Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign Mario Lemina from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer transfer window.

According to Foot Mercato, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is keen to bring the 29-year-old Wolves midfielder to Anfield this summer.

Liverpool clearly need to bolster their central midfield ranks this summer. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have arrived at Anfield but Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and James Milner have all left.

Klopp will have been really frustrated over the past week or so, after missing out on two of his key transfer targets to Premier League rivals Chelsea. The Blues seems to be attacking the transfer market with a certain kind of aggression and speed that Liverpool are struggling to match.

That’s fine, the Reds just need to be a bit smarter in their recruitment this summer.

However, it now seems like Klopp could be getting desperate in his hunt for a central midfielder…

The Wolves star actually performed very well for his team on Monday night against Manchester United. He clearly has plenty of quality, and is a very good player.

Let’s be honest here though. Lemina is a good player but he is not fit to lace the boots of either Moises Caicedo or Romeo Lavia. That may come across as harsh on the 25-capped Gabon international but there is no room for sentiment in elite level sport.

Caicedo or Lavia would have been game-changers for the Merseyside outfit. They are both needle-movers and would have taken Liverpool’s central midfield to a whole new level entirely.

And at just 21 and 19, the Ecuadorian and Belgian would have been vital players for Liverpool for the next decade at least and probably closer to 15 years.

Meanwhile, Lemina will be 30 in just a few weeks. It would be fair to argue that the Gabonese is already past his peak as a central midfielder.

Whilst Klopp might be able to bring Mario Lemina to Liverpool for a bargain fee, the 29-year-old would not help Liverpool make the jump up to Premier League champions again. The signings of either Caicedo or Lavia would have though, I’m sure of it.

The Reds boss must target someone like Sofyan Amrabat, Khephren Thuram or Ibrahim Sangare, if he is to guide his side back to the top of the table in England and Europe.
