Birmingham City have identified Wayne Rooney as a potential replacement for John Eustace amid exit speculation, reports the Mirror.
Eustace has unsurprisingly caught the attention, having impressed at St. Andrew’s, and Birmingham have begun scouring the marker for a possible replacement, with Rooney emerging on their radar.
Rooney is currently in charge of Major League Soccer club D.C United, but is reportedly open to returning to the English football pyramid, having spent two years with Derby County.
The former Manchester United forward endured a turbulent spell at Pride Park but remained loyal to the cause despite working with a chaotic administration.
However, he was unable to prevent the Rams from dropping into League One before moving on to the United States.
The 37-year-old will welcome the chance to rebuild his career in the Championship and is one of several head coaches Birmingham are considering if Eustace leaves the club this season.
Eustace has emerged as a top target for Rangers, who view the 43-year-old as one of several ideal candidates to replace under-fire Michael Beale.
Beale only joined Rangers last season after departing English second-tier outfit Queens Park Rangers and steered the Teddy Bears to a runners-up spot in the Scottish top flight.
However, Rangers have not kicked off the 2023/24 campaign in sparkling form, picking up just six points from their opening four Premiership outings.
The club have been eliminated from the Champions League but their most recent defeat to Celtic has forced the Rangers hierarchy to consider a change in the dugout.
Beale still has three years left on his contract with Rangers, but his side’s poor start to the campaign means his days at Ibrox Stadium could be numbered.
Birmingham are one of two sides in the Championship that are yet to taste defeat alongside Preston North End, and Eustace’s side sit just two points adrift of the league leaders.
