Ian Wright wants the top teams to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title this season but has claimed he is worried about Liverpool.
The Reds have won the last three games after starting the 2023-24 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, but the former Arsenal star reckons they could struggle going forward.
Joel Matip and Joe Gomez featured as the centre-back pairing in the 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday at Anfield with Virgil van Dijk suspended after he was sent off against Newcastle United, while Ibrahima Konate is currently injured.
Wright has not been impressed with the defensive performance he has seen from Liverpool so far this term, and he doubts if they have what it takes to challenge title holders Man City.
“I don’t want it to be one team chasing them,” he said on Wrighty’s House.
“You need Tottenham Hotspur, you need Arsenal. I don’t know what is happening with Chelsea.
“You need Liverpool even though I am really worried for Liverpool central defensive pairing. If that is what is going to happen.”
The Reds started the season with Van Dijk and Konate before the France international made way for Matip ahead of the Newcastle match due to a knock.
They finally kept their first clean of the season against Villa but have not been really impressive and will need to do better going forward.
Liverpool were below par last term, ending the campaign with only the Community Shield, finishing outside the top four and getting dumped out of the Cup competitions and Champions League.
They lost a couple of players but have strengthened in the middle of the park and have started the new season on an impressive note.
The fans will hope their brilliant start to the campaign is not a false dawn and manager Jurgen Klopp will be eager to see his boys perform excellently well consistently all season.
Liverpool will want to win both the Premier League and Europa League this term and have already been drawn into a favourable group in the European competition.
They start their continental campaign with a trip to LASK on September 21 and will look to make an early statement of intent, but whether they have enough depth at central defence to challenge across all competitions remains to be seen.
