Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas set to sign new contract

Liverpool left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas is in talks to extend his contract with the Merseysiders for an additional two years, The Athletic reports.

The Merseysiders added the Greece international defender to their payroll in the summer of 2020 after parting ways with €13 million to snap him up from Olympiacos.

He was brought in to provide competition for first-choice left-back Andrew Robertson but has barely gotten a whiff of regular first-team football due to the Scotsman’s durability.

Despite being forced to play second fiddle to his Scottish counterpart, Tsimikas has racked up 62 appearances in a Liverpool shirt, contributing 12 assists.

The 27-year-old has proven to be a reliable option at left back when called upon but has found it difficult to displace Robertson, who is widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in the world.

Tsimikas managed 28 appearances across all competitions last term – his highest tally since arriving at Anfield three years ago – and pitched in with six assists.

He has barely kicked a ball for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season, with only four minutes of Premier League football to his name courtesy of a late cameo in the 3-1 success over Bournemouth last month.

He failed to make an appearance in subsequent victories over Newcastle United and Aston Villa, but reports suggest he remains satisfied at the Anfield outfit.

Tsimikas has two years left to run on his current deal, but the Greek defender is ready to pen a contract extension with the six-time European champions.

The purported new deal will keep him tied to the Anfield club until the summer of 2027 as a mark of his importance to Klopp’s side.

Tsimikas has won three trophies during his time with Liverpool, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and Community Shield titles.

He scored the winning penalty in the FA Cup triumph over Chelsea in 2022 and will be looking ahead to further success with the Reds in the coming years.
