Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane wanted to join the Red Devils during his time in the Old Trafford dugout.
The Norwegian was at the Theatre of Dreams from December 2018 to November 2021, and one of the players he wanted was the former Tottenham Hotspur hitman.
However, Man United did not have enough money to get the deal for the England international hitman done, which made a move impossible.
“I would have signed Kane every day of the week and my understanding was that he wanted to come,” Solskjaer told The Athletic.
“But the club didn’t have the budget with the financial constraints from Covid-19, there was no bottomless pit.”
The 30-year-old has bagged 300 goals in 505 games across his club career and did eventually leave Spurs in the summer, moving to Bayern Munich.
Man United were keen on signing him before he left for Germany but did not make any concrete effort and went for Denmark international striker Rasmus Hojlund in the end.
According to the Daily Mail, Kane was willing to wait until next summer to secure a move away from Tottenham to the Old Trafford club on a free transfer, provided the deal was guaranteed to go ahead.
However, he was not certain that the Red Devils would leave the door open for him, which prompted him to join Bayern instead.
Signing Kane would have changed their fortunes, but it appears Man United were unwilling to negotiate with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy given his tough stance when it comes to doing business with Premier League rivals.
He notched 70 league goals in his last three seasons with Tottenham, and while they yielded nothing in terms of silverware, the Red Devils could have won the title with such a number 9 leading their line.
Both parties have moved on and Man United manager Erik ten Hag will now hope Hojlund and co. can help fire his side to glory despite a dismal start to 2023-24 which has seen them lose three of their opening five Premier League games.
