Everton in hunt to sign Can Uzun

Everton are in the race to sign Nuremberg attacking midfielder Can Uzun, according to Florian Plettenberg.

The Sky Sports journalist shared on X (10 October) that a host of clubs including Benfica, Galatasaray, Fenerbahce & Besiktas are interested in signing the teenage sensation of which one club has “already submitted an official offer”.

The 17-year-old Turkish attacker is seen as a “top talent”, and Vincenzo Montella is considering him for the A-national team to prepare for the Euro 2024. He is a part of the country’s golden generation along with Arda Güler and Kenan Yildiz, and Montella wants to give them maximum exposure.

The Toffees have once again made a poor start to the season. Sean Dyche badly needs help from Everton’s new owners, American investment firm 777 Partners, to bring quality players into the side and Uzun appears to be one of their prime targets in January.

Top talent

After impressing heavily for Nuremberg’s academy, he has been called up to the senior team where he has made a tremendous impact. He has registered seven goals and two assists in 10 appearances already and has etched his name in the club’s history book by becoming their youngster player ever to score.

His burgeoning growth hasn’t gone unnoticed and several clubs now are vying for his signature. It will be ideal for him to stay with Nuremberg for a while and develop gradually, but a move away from Germany cannot be completely ruled out.

Benfica have a proven track record of cherry-picking talents from elsewhere and nurturing them into top players, while Uzun could be tempted to join any of the Turkish clubs as well. So, Everton need to be smart here.

The Toffees signed Ashley Young, Arnaut Danjuma, Youssef Chermiti, Jack Harrison, and Beto during the summer, and should look to bring Uzun to Goodison Park in January as well.
