Harry Maguire explains why West Ham move didn’t happen

Harry Maguire has suggested that he wasn’t close to joining West Ham, but hailed them as a “massive club”.

During the summer transfer window, speculations were rife that Maguire would be moving to West Ham, but no deal was agreed between the two clubs.

The 30-year-old dropped down the pecking order at the club last season, and as per Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils were open to selling him during the summer as well.

Maguire has suggested that regular game time is important for his career, something he is not getting at Old Trafford at the moment.

However, he is solely focused on United at the moment, and ready to fight for his place, showcasing his desire and commitment to the club. Having said that, he could be in demand in January if his situation doesn’t change in the next few months.

“Regular game time is really important to me, it has been throughout my career,” said Maguire ahead of England’s clash against Australia.

“The actual opportunity to go to West Ham wasn’t agreed really between both clubs and myself. So it wasn’t just my chance to say ‘Yes and I’m going’.

“It wasn’t agreed between both clubs so the actual opportunity wasn’t there because we didn’t get far enough down the line with it.

“But West Ham is a massive club. But like I said my full focus is still on Manchester United, I want to fight for my place but of course regular game time is really important to me.”

Tough

Maguire has been limited to a bit-part role this season under Eric ten Hag. The former United skipper has featured in just four of their 11 matches this campaign, and it is clear that he is not the first-choice option for the Dutchman.

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are Ten Hag’s preferred choices for the centre-back role. Victor Lindelof is ahead of him, and Maguire has been left to compete with veteran Jonny Evans for a place on the bench.

However, when given an option Maguire has done well. He proved his class with an impressive individual display against Brentford and may get more opportunities in the upcoming games.

Maguire could have been perfect for David Moyes and definitely would have played regularly under him. At the moment, his lack of game time for his club is not costing him a place in the national team, but he can’t take it for granted.
