Liverpool manager confirms Cody Gakpo injury blow

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed a knee injury for Cody Gakpo following the 2-1 Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Reds suffered their first defeat of the campaign against Spurs on the road, but the result could have been different. VAR made a significant error which saw Luis Diaz’s first-half goal chalked off.

Speaking after the loss, Klopp said that his ‘biggest problem’ is the injury sustained by Gakpo in the lead-up to his equaliser before the break. The German added that the €55 million-rated star is now with a knee brace limping down the corridor.

He told “The biggest problem of the game, to be honest… before Cody Gakpo scored, we got a free-kick and he got injured and he is now with a brace limping down the corridor.”

“That’s my biggest problem, to be honest, in this moment. We lost two [to red cards] and maybe a third player – really bad, really bad. So, yes, that’s something we have to deal with obviously.”

Big injury blow

Gakpo started the campaign in a slow fashion, but he has been hugely impressive in the last four games with three goals. Hence, his injury is a big blow for the Reds for the forthcoming games.

Liverpool and Klopp will be hoping that he has not suffered a serious injury which could keep him on the sidelines for months. In his absence, Darwin Nunez looks set to lead the attack again.

The Uruguayan has four goals and two assists in the bag this season. The setback for Gakpo offers him the opportunity to cement himself as an undisputed starter over the coming matches.

Liverpool host Union Saint-Gilloise in the Europa League on Thursday before a tricky league game at Brighton & Hove Albion prior to the international break.

Aside from Gakpo, Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones will be absent for the South Coast trip following their unfortunate red cards at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
