Sam Greenwood moved to Middlesbrough in the summer on loan from Leeds United, and he has impressed for Boro.
According to Phil Hay of The Athletic, Boro have an option to sign the attacking midfielder for just £1.5m at the end of the season.
The Whites paid a similar amount to sign the 21-year-old from Arsenal back in 2020. He scored his first goal for Boro during Saturday’s 4-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Lights.
Michael Carrick’s team has now won four games in a row, and Greenwood has played a major role in it. We have seen how Boro had failed to convert loan deals for Chuba Akpom, Ryan Giles, and Cameron Archer in the past and probably they won’t make the same mistake with Greenwood, especially when he is available for a measly fee.
Is Greenwood good enough for Leeds?
Greenwood signed a long-term contract at Elland Road last August that will keep him at the club until 2026. Jesse Marsch appeared to have kept faith in him, as also Marcelo Bielsa, but following Leeds’ relegation to the Championship, his situation has changed drastically.
Michael Skubala, Javi Gracia, and Sam Allardyce all came and left since Marsch was sacked, and now Daniel Farke is in charge. Greenwood was not in Farke’s plans so the Whites allowed him to go out on loan during the summer.
Greenwood has made 25 Premier League appearances already but doubts remain over his long-term future at the Yorkshire club. He has the age on his side to fulfill his potential but clearly, his future looks away from Elland Road.
If he impresses heavily under Carrick, Boro should pay £1.5m and sign him permanently. Right now, they are 16th in the league table after a sluggish start and should focus on climbing up the ladder more than anything else.
Leeds, meanwhile, are fifth in the table with 19 points, 11 points behind league-leaders Leicester City.
