Newcastle star Sandro Tonali faces decisive day over suspension for betting breaches

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali faces a decisive day with his lawyers set to meet with the federal prosecutor of the FIGC over the length of his suspension for betting breaches.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that the 23-year-old was involved in illegal betting which also included his previous club AC Milan. His representatives have already acknowledged his mistake and he is now on course for a lengthy suspension.

Juventus’ Nicolo Fagioli recently received a reduced suspension of seven months from FIGC, but he did not bet on his own team unlike Tonali. Hence, his ongoing ban could be lengthier and we should know very soon.

According to Corriere dello Sport, his lawyers are scheduled to meet up with FIGC’s federal prosecutor Giuseppe Chiné. There will be maximum confidentiality over the place and time where the discussions will be held.

Tonali is working on a plea bargain and UEFA are said to want a quick resolution. As things stand, Newcastle United have offered their complete support to the midfielder and plan to keep on playing him until the ban.

The Magpies are scheduled to host Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday night and UEFA seem in a hurry to speed up the matter such that he is not involved in the upcoming European encounter.

The suspension will be revealed by FIGC very soon, but there have been suggestions that he could receive a ban of at least one year, considering he also betted on games involving AC Milan during his time at the club.

Regardless of the length, his absence is a huge blow for the Magpies. The €60 million-rated star has had a fine start to his Premier League career with the club and he could potentially be away for the remainder of the campaign.
