Simon Jordan urges Everton target Kalvin Phillips to leave Man City

Michael Brown believes Kalvin Phillips & Harry Maguire deserve their England call-ups despite club form

Simon Jordan has urged England midfielder Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City at the earliest.

Writing his column for the Daily Mail (print edition, 12/10/2023, page 71), the popular football pundit suggests that Phillips’ agent should focus on getting him out of City quickly rather than trying to find a suitable club for his other client, Ivan Toney.

Phillips moved to City from Leeds in 2022 on a big money deal and it hasn’t worked out for him. Jordan has described his move as “one of the biggest ever acts of self-harm” in a football career and has suggested that if he is not getting regular games, there’s no point wasting his career.

Earlier this week, Inews claimed that a host of clubs including Everton are keen to sign him in January on a loan deal. Phillips is expected to attract plenty of admirers, and City probably won’t stand in his way, as he is clearly not in Pep Guardiola’s first-team plans.

Goodison Park move perfect for Phillips

Jordan is absolutely spot on here. Phillips was one of the main stars for England in Euro 2020, and it’s really sad to see him struggle at City.

The 27-year-old is arguably one of the best defensive midfielders in the league, and he should join a club where he’ll be guaranteed regular games. Gareth Southgate has been very loyal to his players, but he will find really hard to pick Phillips if he doesn’t play regularly.

Everton will be aiming to avoid another relegation battle this season and Phillips could make a big difference to the side. Phillips had the opportunuity to leave during the summer, but he didn’t want to leave. This time, he shouldn’t think twice about moving elsewhere in January.
