Celtic battle Rangers to sign Nathaniel Adjei

Rangers and Celtic are keeping close tabs on Hammarby star Nathaniel Adjei, according to Sky Sports.

The 21-year-old has had a breakthrough season in Sweden, and Sky Sports claim (transfer live blog; 3 November – 17.10pm) that a host of clubs in Europe are monitoring his progress.

He has been tracked by the Ibrox outfit, while teams in Belgium and Italy also hold an interest in Adeji. Celtic are also in the hunt, but Rangers last watched the player in person, so it appears that they are quite serious about signing him.

The “rising” defender has already featured in European games after being promoted to the first team by now-QPR boss Marti Cifuentes.

Sky Sports add that the player is likely to explore his options once the Swedish season finishes in the middle of November, and a potential move in January is possible.

Need for centre-back

Rangers have a wealth of centre-back options but new manager Philippe Clement could look to bring in one or two new players in January.

Ben Davies has impressed so far, but the Gers need to find a long-term solution for Connor Goldson. John Souttar often struggles with injuries while Leon King remains another option.

Leon Balogun returned to the club this summer and Clement has as many as five centre-backs to choose from. If they are serious about landing Adjei, they are likely to offload one or two defenders either on loan or permanently.

The same can be said about Celtic as well. Brendan Rodgers does have a wealth of options. He has the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Stephen Welsh, Yuki Kobayashi, Liam Scales, Nathaniel Phillips, Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke as current options, and one fails to see why would the club still be interested in adding another centre-back.
