Eddie Howe confirms Matt Targett injury blow ahead of Newcastle v Arsenal

Newcastle United are likely to miss left-back Matt Targett for a while, and he is definitely out of the Premier League clash against Arsenal

The Magpies will face Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal on Saturday (04 November) at St James’ Park and Eddie Howe is missing a host of key players.

During the 3-0 win against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, towards the end of the game, Targett picked up a nasty injury.

It looks like a thigh injury and Howe has said that Targett will undergo a scan on Friday (03 November) and after that, they will have a better knowledge of the extent of the injury.

However, he is fearing the worst, and says that it’s a “real blow” to lose a “top player”.

“It doesn’t look good. He is having his scan today so we will know more today. When you have a hamstring injury you fear the worst. It is a real blow to lose him – he is a top player,” said Howe, as quoted by BBC Sport.

Long list of injuries

The Magpies are down to bare bones at the moment with as many as nine key players are injured while Sando Tonali is out for the rest of the season through suspension.

Harvey Barnes is likely to be out for two or three months after picking up an ankle injury and he is still nowhere near to returning to full fitness.

Jacob Murphy picked up a nasty injury in the Champions League clash and he may need an operation. Sven Botman is struggling with a knee injury and no timeframe has been mentioned as to when he can return.

Elliot Anderson and Alexander Isak are both expected to return after the international break. Javier Manquilo is out with a groin injury, while Fabian Schar and Lewis Miley are out with illness.
