Liverpool have booked their place in the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup after beating AFC Bournemouth 2-1 on Wednesday night.
Goals from Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez earned the Reds a victory in the cup competition, and they will now face West Ham in the next round.
After Bournemouth leveled through summer signing Justin Kluivert, it felt like the pressure was back on Liverpool, but Nunez cut in from the left and picked his spot perfectly to score in the 70th minute. As per BBC Sports, chants of “Nunez, Nunez, Nunez” rang out around the Vitality Stadium when the full-time whistle went.
The 24-year-old has been enjoying a fantastic campaign so far. As per TNT Sports, he is averaging a goal involvement every 55 minutes for Liverpool this season, and Jurgen Klopp should be thrilled about it.
The Uruguayan joined the club last summer for a fee of around £64m last summer. He scored 15 goals in all competitions for the Reds last season but the club expected more from him. It was his inconsistency that emerged as a big concern for Klopp.
Nunez has managed seven goals and four assists in all competitions and he is gradually showing his true class. The striker admitted that it was tough for him initially to adjust to the pace of the league. But, it seems he is enjoying his time at Anfield.
He has improved a lot on finishing and Klopp has played a big role. Nunez revealed that Klopp has told him to stay calm when it comes to finishing. However, it is his off-the-ball movement that is causing problems for the opposition defence.
Nunez’s work rate was never in doubt but Klopp will be thrilled to see that he is making direct contributions with goals and assists now.
