Arsenal evaluating move for Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto

Four issues Mikel Arteta must address at Arsenal

Arsenal are evaluating a move for Barcelona’s versatile midfielder Sergi Roberto ahead of the January transfer window, according to a report from SPORT.

The 31-year-old is contemplating his future at Nou Camp as his contract is set to expire in 2024. Scheduled talks with The Blaugrana will determine whether he chooses to depart for north London.

The report from SPORT suggests that Arsenal, having expressed interest before, are now considering a surprising move for the Spain International. His potential addition is seen as valuable due to his versatility across multiple positions and wealth of experience

Despite captaining Barcelona on several occasions this season, Roberto’s future under Xavi is uncertain, and the Premier League is viewed as an ideal destination should he decide to part ways with the Spanish giants.

Rather than lose him for free as his contract is set to expire in June 2024, Barcelona might opt to sell the defender for a modest transfer fee of €3m which is his valuation by Transfermarkt.

Versatile player

Arteta may see Barcelona’s playing style as compatible with Arsenal’s, making the Barcelona utility man an appealing short-term prospect. The potential ease with which the Spaniard could adapt to the Emirates’ methods might prove advantageous for the team.

Roberto’s ability to play various positions aligns with Arteta’s preferences for versatile players who can fill multiple roles. Given Arsenal’s shortages in midfield, attack, and defense, the Spaniard could prove invaluable.

He has won seven league titles for Barcelona and two Champions League titles as well. Roberto is primarily a midfielder but he can play as a full-back as well.

There appears to be a significant opportunity for the Gunners to secure the experienced star at a reasonable cost, potentially integrating him into the squad for immediate reinforcement.

Despite spending his entire career at Barcelona, financial difficulties at the club might prompt a departure for Roberto, who came through the academy. Arteta had previously tried to bring him to Arsenal last year.

With injuries affecting midfielders Thomas Partey and Fabio Vieira, Roberto’s potential arrival could offer crucial cover in the middle of the pitch. Given his versatility, the Spaniard can also contribute at full-back, presenting a practical solution to some of Arsenal’s challenges.
