Arsenal may not sell Cedric Soares in January

Arsenal may not sell defender Cedric Soares in the January transfer window, according to a report from The Athletic.

The Gunners spent heavily in the summer transfer window and they do have a strong squad that can fight the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City all the way for the Premier League title.

Mikel Arteta has said recently that he could look to delve into the market to bolster the squad.

The defence is one area where the Gunners probably need strengthening, and until they do so, chances are high that they will not sell fringe players like Soares.

The 32-year-old defender has been targeted by Spanish club Villarreal, but the Gunners feel that they may need a cover. The Portugal defender could be required in the second half of the season, although he hasn’t played a single minute in the Premier League.

He has started in one Champions League game this season but could play some part going forward.

Potential departures

Ideally, it makes sense for Soares to consider a move elsewhere as he won’t be getting enough game time. At Villarreal, he may not be a regular starter, but he won’t warm the bench either.

Jakub Kiwior is also another player who is often linked with a move away from the club. The defender has failed to make a huge impact and he has admirers in Italy. But it is really hard to imagine that Arteta will sanction a move, especially at a time when they’re so light in defence.

However, one player who could change Arteta’s transfer plans completely is Aaron Ramsdale. The goalkeeper was outstanding last season but he has lost his starting role to David Raya.

He has been linked with a move away from the Emirates, but Arsenal may want to hold on to him when they have plenty to play for this season.
