Newcastle are looking to add one or two players in the January transfer window, and they could be looking to sign a new goalkeeper.
According to Luke Edwards, a new goalkeeper could be an option for the Magpies who are also looking to sign a midfielder and a striker.
Eddie Howe would love to bolster the squad in January but he is well aware of the budget restrictions.
The Telegraph journalist writes that free agent David De Gea is keen on a short-term deal at St James’ Park. It will be interesting to see if the Magpies make a move for him next month.
Newcastle are also looking to sign a new midfielder and they are keen to add Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
Good move?
Signing a new goalkeeper could be a priority for the Magpies following the injury to Nick Pope who is unlikely to return within the next two months at least.
Newcastle have been linked with a move for Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale but they can only arrange a loan deal for him. It is also not clear whether Mikel Arteta will be willing to sell him as well.
De Gea won’t be a bad option. The 33-year-old is currently a free agent and he would be tempted to return to action in the Premier League.
The Spaniard is a vastly experienced goalkeeper who made 545 appearances for the Red Devils. He has managed 45 appearances for the Spain national team.
Newcastle’s form has dropped significantly since Pope got injured, and Martin Duvravka hasn’t been able to exude enough confidence.
Having said that, the Magpies are operating on a tight budget. Although De Gea won’t cost them a penny, he is likely to command a hefty wages, which the club may not be willing to pay at the moment.
