Eddie Howe has been left impressed with Newcastle youngster Lewis Miley after the Magpies earned a 3-0 win against Fulham on Saturday (16 December) in the Premier League.
The 17-year-old etched his name in the history book by becoming the youngest-ever player to have scored in the Premier League for this iconic club, breaking James Milner’s record.
He scored the opening goal for the Magpies in the second half from close range. Miguel Almiron and Dan Burn also found the net for the Magpies as they returned to winning ways after a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against AC Milan in their previous game.
Howe has hailed the youngster as “magnificent”, and added that he has set a high standard for himself. The Magpies boss also admitted that he wanted to give him rest for this game, but such is the injury crisis at the moment, he had to bring him in place of Joelinton.
“He’s come into the team and been magnificent. He’s deserved to keep his place. We wanted to rest him today, someone so young, and today he got his rewards. His overall performance level has been so high,” said Howe after the game, as quoted by BBC Sport.
Fatigue
Howe will be pleased to see the retun of Sven Botman into the first team after a long injury-lay off, he will be disappointed at the same time with injuries to Fabian Schar and Joelinton.
The squad has been reduced to bare bones and Howe is struggling to keep his players fresh. He is not being able to rotate the squad and admitted after the game that his players are fatigued.
The exit from the Champions League can be a blessing in disguise for them. The Magpies can now concentrate on the Premier League and make a strong effort to get into the top four, which will not be easy this time around, especially with Aston Villa and Tottenham playing so well.
