England’s potential squad for Euro 24 – who could make the cut

England have secured their place in next year’s European Championships. We take a look at who could make Gareth Southgate’s squad next summer.

England have secured their place in next year’s European Championships after sailing through the qualifying round.

They finished at the top of their group with 20 points from eight games. The Three Lions have been dominant in the qualifying fixtures over the last few years and things went smoothly for them once again on this occasion.

The group stage draw of Euro 24 has already taken place and England have been drawn alongside Denmark, Serbia and Slovenia in Group C. Gareth Southgate’s side shouldn’t break their sweat to get past the group stage round and qualify for the knockout stage. However, tickets for the games will still be in high demand and supporters can buy sold-out Euro 2024 tickets through trusted resellers like seatsnet.com.

This year’s European Championship is set to take place in Germany and it’s going to be very interesting to see who will be able to secure their place in England’s 23-man squad and travel to Germany to feature in this competition.

Teams were permitted to carry a 26-man squad at Euro 20 and the World Cup 2022. But, the 23-man limit has now been restored for next year’s European Championship.

Southgate doesn’t make many changes to his starting eleven so without any injury problems, it’s pretty much predictable how England will line-up in their first game against Denmark.

However, there could be some surprise inclusion to the 23-man squad if someone manages to display excellent performances for his club between now and the end of this season.

Dead certs

Harry Kane is the highest scorer of England and he has been enjoying a stellar campaign in his debut season for Bayern Munich. So, there is no doubt about his selection in England’s 23-man squad for Euro 24.

Harry Maguire is another player that Southgate likes to have in his starting eleven. The Man Utd defender struggled to showcase his best last term but has turned his future around at Old Trafford this season. He has been injured at the moment but it is almost certain the United star will be in the England squad for next year’s European Championship.

Declan Rice is another player who has established himself as a key member of Southgate’s starting eleven in recent times and the midfielder has been displaying impressive performances for Arsenal this term after joining them last summer. So, there is very little doubt about the possibility of him being in the England squad for Euro 24.

After joining Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham has already established himself as a talismanic figure for Los Blancos. He has been enjoying a productive campaign for the record Spanish champions.

Bellingham was a key part of England’s World Cup squad last year and he will be pivotal for his country in next year’s European Championship as well.

Jordan Pickford is Southgate’s preferred goalkeeper option over the last few years and it’s unlikely to be anything different any time soon. The Everton star has been enjoying a promising season this season and he will certainly be in goal for England in next year’s European Championship.

After coming through the Hale End academy, Bukayo Saka has established himself as an integral part of Mikel Arteta’s starting eleven at Arsenal. The winger has also started to gain the trust of Southgate and was deployed in the right-wing position for England in last year’s World Cup. So, he is likely to be the first choice option for Southgate to be deployed in the right flank in next year’s European Championship.

Kyle Walker and Kieran Trippier have been the main right-back options for Southgate over the last few years. They both have been displaying excellent performances this season so they will travel with the England squad to Germany to feature in Euro 24.

John Stones is another player Southgate likes in his starting eleven. However, the Manchester City star has been struggling with injury problems this season so if he can stay fit then he is likely to be in England’s 23-man squad. So, these are the players guaranteed to be in the England squad for the European Championship, barring any injury problems.

More possible stars to be named in the squad

Nick Pope is Southgate’s second-choice goalkeeper option but he has currently been sidelined with a serious injury. But, he is likely to return before the end of this season so he is expected to be named in England’s European Championship squad.

England don’t have many left-back options at the moment so it’s highly likely that Luke Shaw will travel with the England squad in Germany next year if he manages to remain fit.

Marc Guehi and Lewis Dunk have secured their place in Southgate’s squad in recent times so they could also be named in England’s 23-man squad for Euro 24.

Kalvin Phillips is a player – who is highly admired by Southgate and the midfielder is set to engineer a move away from Manchester City in January to play regular first-team football in the second half of this season. So, it is likely he would also be included in the England squad for next year’s competition.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been considered as a midfielder by Southgate, although the player plays in the right-back position for Liverpool. He should also be in the England squad, considering his current excellent form.

Despite moving to Saudi Arabia last summer, Jordan Henderson has remained in Southgate’s plan. So, he could also be in England’s squad for next year’s European Championship.

Man City duo Jack Grealish and Phil Foden are also expected to feature in the European Championship next year for England, while Ollie Watkins is set to be named in the final squad to deputise Kane, considering his current excellent form.

James Maddison is also expected to be in the squad if he can continue performing at his best in the second half of this season after returning from his injury. Jarrod Bowen has been enjoying a stellar campaign this term so he is also likely to be in England’s 23-man squad for Euro 24.

Likely to miss out

Marcus Rashford has endured a dire campaign this term and it’s highly unlikely that he would be named in England’s squad unless he manages to turn his fortune around in the second half of this season.

Aaron Ramsdale was almost knocking on the door to break his way into England’s starting eleven after displaying promising performances for Arsenal last term. But, he has found himself on the periphery this term so it doesn’t look likely that he would be named in England’s Euro 24 squad. So, in place of him, Sam Johnstone could travel with the England squad to Germany next year.

Raheem Sterling hasn’t been at his best after joining Chelsea so he may also miss out on the chance of playing in Euro 24 next year. Fikayo Tomori may also miss out as Southgate has shown reluctance to pick players who have been playing in Serie A. Southgate could opt to pick his 23-man squad for Euro 24 without Conor Gallagher in it despite his promising performances for Chelsea this term.
