Newcastle United are relying heavily on Martin Dubravka at the moment but they could be interested in signing a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window.
Nick Pope is expected to be out for four months, and if Dubravka fails to impress in the next few games, Eddie Howe could look to bring in a new player in that position, probably on a short-term deal.
A host of names have been thrown around including Aaron Ramsdale and David de Gea, while Hugo Lloris has been mentioned as a potential option for the Magpies.
According to a report from L’Equipe, Lloris could be tempted to move to Tyneside next month. The 36-year-old goalkeeper has dropped down the pecking order at the club and he is yet to make an appearance this season.
Lloris is a legend at Tottenham having made over 445 appearances in all competitions, spanning over 12 years. He has been an outstanding servant for both club and country, and UEFA hailed his save against Belgium as “sensational”.
L’Equipe says that Lloris wasn’t keen to move to Newcastle last summer because he wasn’t willing to become a second-choice option. However, the injury to Pope means he has a chance to play regularly once again.
Ideally, Newcastle should be aiming to get him on a short-term deal. He has got loads of experience and would be available at a decent price, if at all.
Newcastle desperately need to bolster other areas of the pitch and it is needless to fork out a substantial fee for Ramsdale at the moment when Lloris is still available. He can do a pretty decent job for the rest of the season.
Lloris will be a free agent at the end of the season. So, Spurs won’t mind if he leaves early and plays elsewhere. While De Gea would be another good option for the Magpies, his wages can be a major stumbling block.
