Liverpool moved to the second in the Premier League table after beating Fulham 4-3 at Anfield on Sunday afternoon (3 December).
Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for defender Trent Alexander-Arnold who scored a brace to earn all three points for the Reds.
The 25-year-old opened the scoring with a spectacular free-kick, which Klopp described as “unbelievable”.
Liverpool were training 3-2 at one point. However, two quick goals towards the end, including a volley from Alexander-Arnold sealed the victory for the Reds in a pulsating thriller.
Klopp later said that Alexander-Arnold’s development since he came into the senior team has been “crazy”.
“Trent’s free-kick, unbelievable,” said Klopp, as quoted by Liverpoolfc.com.
“I’m not sure I have to say anything about that. Nobody is in doubt how highly I think about Trent.
“He plays here since I’m here pretty much – longer, of course, but with the first team pretty much since I’m here. The development is crazy.
“His shooting skills we knew before. It’s now a while ago, I think, that he scored with a free-kick, so it would not be bad if we could do that better – for that we need fouls around that area, we don’t have that a lot. Today he was a real leader on the pitch – that’s probably the biggest improvement, if you want.”
Klopp has played major role
Alexander-Arnold is a natural right-back who brings more to the game than just defending. His defensive abilities have come into question, but no one can complain about his attacking qualities.
He is a terrific passer of the ball and can shoot well. The England defender can score from free-kicks as well, and this season, he has scored two goals already in the Premier League. The goal from free-kick was given as an own goal, but we all know it was Trent’s mastery written all over it.
Klopp also deserves massive credit for shaping Alexander-Arnold’s career. By bringing Joe Gomez into the side, he offers Alexander-Arnold the licence to play in midfield from where he simply dominates the game with his long diagonal deliveries and gets into good scoring areas.
Could this be the game that will give Liverpool players and the fans the belief that they can challenge for the title? The way they came from behind to seal a dramatic victory proves that they have found that monster mentality back again that was missing last season.
