Liverpool eye move for Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix

Liverpool could be forced to sign a new defender following the injury to Joel Matip and they have identified Maxence Lacroix as a potential option, according to a report from The Mirror

The Reds have suffered a big blow this week after Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Joel Matip has suffered an ACL injury and he probably won’t take any part in the present campaign.

The towering centre-back may have played his last game for his club as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season. It looks unlikely that Liverpool will offer him a new deal which means the Reds will have to look for options elsewhere.

Lacroix is a key player for Bundesliga side Wolfsburg and he would be available for around £25m plus add-ons. The 23-year-old has represented France at youth levels and Liverpool would look to “negotiate for any player into the final two years of their deal”.

Need for central defender

Klopp probably would have signed a new defender during the summer window but he first needed to bolster his midfield areas after Jordan Henderson and Fabinho had left the club.

The injury to Matip means Liverpool are a bit short of options at the back. Natt Phillips who is currently on loan at Celtic is not in Klopp’s long-term plans which means, the Reds boss will probably delve into the market in January.

Liverpool youngster Jarell Quansah has impressed everyone this season and he is rapidly progressing. However, it would be too risky to depend on him, rather Klopp wants to groom him naturally.

Lacroix joined Wolfsburg in 2020 and has made over 85 appearances for the German club. The “powerful” defender has made 12 appearances so far and has one goal to his name. He manages 1.8 tackles and 4.6 clearances, as per whoscored, and could be a fantastic addition to the squad.

The Reds are also keen to sign Marc Guehi but Crystal Palace will not sell him in January.
