Liverpool suffer Mac Allister injury blow

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister picked up an injury during the Reds’ 2-0 win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in the Premier League on Wednesday night (6 December), and he could be out for a while.

The Argentine midfielder required stitches on his knee after a bad tackle early in the first half. Jurgen Klopp has described it as a “shame”, but he hopes that the 24-year-old will return to action quickly.

Mac Allister went on to play the entire first half and then at the hour mark, he simply couldn’t continue and was replaced by Curtis Jones.

“Macca, it was a shame. Early, he stepped on his knee, there was a cut. As long as the wound was open, we just strapped it obviously, it was painful but he could play,” said Klopp, as quoted by the club official website.

“Then we stitched it but then obviously it got a bit tighter there and then he couldn’t move anymore. Now we have to see how long that will take. I hope not too long.”

Growing injury list

Klopp confirmed after the match that centre-back Joel Matip could be out for the rest of the season after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

Matip is in the final year of his contract at Anfield and may have played his final game for the club. He has been a terrific servant for the Reds, but it looks highly unlikely that the defender could return to action this season.

Andy Robertson is also a long-term absentee while the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Alisson, Stefan Bajcetic and Diogo Jota are also absent for the Reds.

Liverpool do have plenty of options in midfield, though. Jones is likely to start the next game in place of Mac Allister while Ryan Gravenberch could be an option as well.

The Reds are second in the Premier League with 34 points, two points behind Arsenal at the top.
