Newcastle United are keen to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City on loan in the January transfer window, and they have a good chance of signing him.
According to a report from talkSPORT, Man City will not block Phillips from joining the Magpies in January.
The England midfielder has attracted offers from clubs in Europe. Serie A giants Juventus Juventus has already opened talks with the Citizens over a move for Phillips in the New Year, but in a fresh “new twist”, he is set to stay in the Premier League.
The Telegraph reported on 27 December that the Magpies are hoping to agree a loan deal for Phillips but they have not initiated talks so far. Phillips has played just 89 Premier League minutes this season and City are ready to let him go.
Phillips has emerged as a top target for Newcastle. The Magpies are looking to sign a replacement for Sandro Tonali who has been banned for the rest of the season.
Good chance
Phillips joined City on a big-money deal from Leeds two seasons back, but he failed to make an impact under Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard has hailed him as a top professional but admitted that he doesn’t see him as a part of his plans.
Newcastle are badly struggling at the moment, having lost six of their last seven games. Eddie Howe’s side has been ravaged by injuries this season and the manager needs help in the winter transfer market.
Phillips is a vastly experienced midfielder and he was a hero at Leeds United. It is really unfortunate that he couldn’t establish himself at City, but he is good enough to play for Newcastle or any other club.
The Magpies have financial issues but he would be a cracking signing on loan. They must get the deal done at the earliest.
