Manchester United are keeping close tabs on RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda as they look to sign him in the next summer transfer window, according to a report from Sunday People (10 December).
The 23-year-old striker joined the Bundesliga club last summer from French outfit Lens for a fee of around £35m.
The Red Devils are looking to ship out the likes of Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho, and they see Openda as a perfect replacement.
Sunday People (10 December, page 55) claims that United scouts were in attendance at the Etihad Stadium to watch Openda where he scored twice against Manchester City in the Champions League, although Pep Guardiola’s side won the game 3-2.
His impressive form in the Bundesliga has caught the attention of several top clubs around the world, including Tottenham Hotspur who could be looking to replace Richarlison.
Openda has managed 10 goals and three assists in the Bundesliga this season and also scored four times in the Champions League.
Makes sense
The priority for United at the moment is to finish within the top four this season which won’t be easy at all. Aston Villa are not only looking strong to finish in the top four this season, but they could mount a challenge for the Premier League title as well.
At the same time, Erik ten Hag (if he stays) needs to get rid of unwanted players at the club like Martial and Sancho. The England winger has been frozen out and he is not showing any inclination to play under the Dutchman.
Martial has been at the club for a long time but he is at best a squad player. There is no point keeping him at a high wage when the return from him is nowhere near any accepted level.
Rasmus Hojlund needs more time to settle down in the Premier League, while Marcus Rashford has been very disappointing. Openda would be a very good signing for the club but it won’t be easy to lure him away.
