Manchester United lead race for Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

Manchester United have taken the lead ahead of other Premier League clubs in the pursuit of Bologna striker, Joshua Zirkzee, according to journalist Eleonora Trotta

The 22-year-old has been an outstanding performer for Bologna as they bid for a top-four finish in the Serie A this season. The Netherland u21 International has recorded eight goals in 19 appearances for Thiago Motta’s side this season and his performances have caught the eye of United who are keen on improving their attacking ranks.

United are not alone in the race as Milan Web previously revealed that Newcastle United and AC Milan are also in the race for the youngster.

Zirkzee has a contract at The Renato Dall’Ara Stadium that runs until 2026 and the Caociomercato journalist reports that Bologna have inserted a £35m release clause in his contract that can only be activated by the player’s consent.

United need firepower upfront

Rasmus Hojlund netted his first goal in the Premier League in the 3:2 win over Aston Villa, his first League goal in 15 matches, highlighting United’s need for a consistent goalscoring threat.

Erik Ten Hag’s side remain short of options upfront with Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, and Antony all underperforming this season. This has prompted United’s need for a move for Zirkzee whose display offers more attacking threat for his side.

Zirkzee moved to Bologna from Bayern Munich who still hold a £19m buy-back clause for the player.

He possesses immense qualities that suit Erik Ten Hag’s transitional system. Zirkzee is tipped to slot in seamlessly in United’s side as his physicality, burst of space and finishing makes him an unavoidable starter for his side.

With Jadon Sancho tipped to leave, Antony, Martial, and Rashford underperforming, making a swoop for Zirkzee would ensure United still have a viable option and depth up front, as they look to build on their 3-2 victory over Villa.
