Paul Dummett reacts as Newcastle will face Sunderland in FA Cup third round

Newcastle will face derby rivals Sunderland in the FA Cup third round after the draw was made on Sunday (3 December).

The Magpies will travel to Wearside to face the Black Cats at the iconic Stadium of Lights, and the fixture is likely to be played over the weekend of 6-7 January 2024.

Paul Dummett took to X (Formerly Twitter) to share his reaction. He wrote: “This weekend just got better.”

Newcastle earned a fantastic 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League on Saturday at St James’ Park where Anthony Gordon scored the winning goal.

Great fixture

Newcastle have progressed immensely under Eddie Howe and they will be aiming for a cup trophy this season. They have won the FA Cup six times in their history but haven’t won since 1955.

However, they have a very good squad and are capable of beating any side on their day.

The Magpies haven’t met Sunderland since 2016, when they drew 1-1 at St James’ Park. Sunderland have been struggling a bit in the Championship in recent months, and they find themselves ninth in the table at the moment.

Having said that, it’s a cup game, and both sets of fans will relish the tie. It’s been a long time since the two clubs have played against each other.

While Newcastle are going from strength to strength under Howe’s leadership, it doesn’t look like Sunderland will be returning to the Premier League anytime soon.

The Magpies have now defeated Chelsea and Manchester United in back-to-back league games, and they will face Everton in the next Premier League game on Thursday (7 December).
