Philippe Clement confirms Todd Cantwell could feature in Rangers v Aberdeen

Rangers will face Aberdeen in the Viaplay Cup final at Hampden Park on Sunday (17 December) and Phillipe Clement hopes to get Todd Cantwell back for this crucial game.

The 25-year-old didn’t participate in the Europa League game against Real Betis due to “personal circumstances” but Clement has confirmed on Saturday (16 December) that Cantwell has trained with the squad and he will be in the squad tomorrow.

The Gers winger Scott Wright is also available for selection, while young Leon King is also fit to play. Jose Cifuentes, however, won’t make the squad due to injury.

“Todd Cantwell trained today so there is a chance he will be there tomorrow. Jose Cifuentes will be injured – we are unsure how long for. Scott Wright is available, as is Leon King,” said Clement.

Big game

The Bears have progressed a lot under Clement and it will give them loads of confidence if they can win a trophy under him. Aberdeen are capable of causing an upset, and most importantly, anything can happen in a cup game, but Rangers should be confident ahead of this game.

In the midweek, the Gers produced a terrific performance to beat Real Betis 3-2 in Spain to book a place in the knock-out stages of the Europa League.

They are undefeated in their last 14 games in all competitions and are closing the gap with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership as well.

Cantwell was signed by former Gers manager Michael Beale last January and he hasn’t flourished as many had expected. The former Norwich City attacking midfielder has come under criticism from time to time under pundits and even Clement took him early in some games as well.

He is still a big player for the Bears but his numbers are not impressive at all. He is yet to score a goal in the Scottish Premiership this season and has managed only three assists thus far.
