Sean Dyche has showered praise on Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye after the Toffees earned a 2-0 victory over Chelsea on Sunday (10 December).
The 34-year-old midfielder started the game against the Blues but he was taken off at the break. Dyche has hailed him as “excellent”, adding that he was tired.
Gueye has been brilliant for Everton as they picked up three wins in a row for the first time since 2021. With this victory, Sean Dyche’s side moved four points clear of the relegation zone.
Goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and substitute Lewis Dobbin in the second half sealed all three points for the Toffees.
“I thought Idrissa Gana Gueye was excellent. We only took him off because he’s put so much in recently. He just looked tired,” said Dyche, as quoted by EvertonTv.
Impressive
Everton were involved in two relegation battles in the past two seasons, and one failed to see signs of progress. Under Frank Lampard, the Toffees rarely managed to win games, let alone away from home.
Dyche was left with a herculean task to resurrect the club. It wasn’t easy for him as the Toffees were already struggling with financial issues. They were deducted 10 points last month and it looked like another relegation battle was looming large for them.
With five wins in their last seven Premier League games, the Toffees are riding high on momentum. They have started to win games away from home, and are looking more likely to finish high up the table.
In fact, they would have been sitting comfortably ahead of Chelsea if they were not docked off points. The players have responded to Dyche’s methods and Goodison Park looks a happy place once again.
Gueye has managed 12 starts in the Premier League this season and has one goal to his name. He manages around 2.4 tackles per game, as per whoscored, and has played a massive role in Everton’s resurgence in recent weeks.
