Newcastle United will face Fulham at St James’ Park in the Premier League on Saturday (16 December) and Eddie Howe could welcome back Sven Botman for this game.
The Magpies are just starting to get some of their players back from injury, although they have suffered fresh setbacks at the same time. Harvey Barnes is not expected to return anytime soon, while Nick Pope remains a long-term absentee.
David Ornstein of The Athletic claimed earlier that Newcastle’s priority in signing a new defender hinges on how quickly they get Botman back in the side, and he suggested that the Dutch defender should return within the next two or three weeks.
Journalist Craig Hope has delivered “better injury news” for the Magpies fans. He says that he was told that Botman is nearing a return from a knee injury and that he could be available to face Fulham on Saturday, although from the bench.
“In better injury news for Newcastle, I’m told Sven Botman is nearing a return from knee injury. Outside chance of bench tomorrow,” wrote Hope on X.
Current injury situation
While Pope and Jacob Murphy will be out for a long time, Howe will be disappointed with the fresh update on Barnes. The former Leicester City attacking midfielder has felt pain in his foot once again, and there is a possibility that he could go under the knife.
Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock are not long-term absentees but Howe said recently that it’s difficult at the moment to put a timeline about when they can return.
Javier Manquillo and Matt Targett are also out injured while Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon are doubtful for this game.
Newcastle suffered a massive blow in midweek after they were crushed out of the Champions League. They need to focus on the league now, and the return of Botman will be crucial for them.
