Tim Sherwood blasts Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier

Tim Sherwood was left unimpressed by Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier after the Magpies lost 3-0 against Everton at Goodison Park on Thursday night (8 December).

While watching the footage of the second goal by Abdoulaye Doucoure, Sherwood says that it was the “worst” performance he has seen from Trippier who has been an “absolute nightmare”.

Trippier made a mistake in the 79th minute which resulted in the opening goal scored by Dwight McNeil. The ever-reliable defender made another mistake a few minutes later while trying to nutmeg Jack Harrison, and that led to the second goal.

Trippier also made a mistake for the third goal as he was out of position and Beto made full use of it. Trippier has been one of the key players under Eddie Howe, and this performance was way below his standard, says Sherwood, who also works for Sky Sports.

“He tries to nutmeg Harrison there. He dribbles brilliantly into the box, and picks out a pass. Dwight McNeill misses but Doucoure joins into the box and rolls that in. For Trippier, it was the worst 10 minutes I have ever seen he ever had,” said Sherwood on Premier League World feed (7 December).

“He is Mr. Dependable but tonight he has had an absolute nightmare.”

During the post-match talk show, Ian Wright made a point that Trippier and the Newcastle defence ran out of steam, and that’s why Everton could demolish them towards the end.

While it seems like a lapse of concentration from Trippier, it can seen as a tired body and tired mind from some of the Newcastle players, and physically it is probably taking a toll on them.

The Magpies are struggling with loads of injuries at the moment and Eddie Howe is struggling to shuffle his squad. He is missing a lot of key players, especially in defence, and with games coming thick and fast, he hasn’t been able to rotate the squad as he would have wished.
