Celtic picked up a massive win after they defeated Rangers 2-1 in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday (30 December) at Celtic Park.
Goncalves Bernando scored in the first half and Kyogo Furuhashi added another in the second to earn all three points for the Hoops.
James Tavernier pulled one back for the visitors to make it a nervy ending in the end, but Celtic did enough to make sure they do not concede any late goals.
Tom English took to X after the game to share his reaction. The BBC Sport journalist was blown away by the performance of Callum McGregor and hailed him as “excellent”. He has reserved loads of praise for Kyogo who scored a stunning goal.
“Kyogo haunting Rangers yet again. What an absolute pearler that is. Lovely footwork and a devastating finish. 2-0,” English wrote on X.
“Celtic have dominated the middle of the park, Callum McGregor excellent. Two superb goals. Too much wastefulness from Rangers. Nawrocki really good off the bench. Glad that ‘penalty’ incident was finally explained as offside before the Johnston handball,” he added in a separate tweet.
The penalty controversy
In the first half, Rangers players appealed for a penalty after Alistair Johnston appeared to have handled the ball inside the box. However, VAR after a thorough checking didn’t signal for a spot-kick leaving many pundits baffled.
However, it was later cleared that there was an offside against Sima in the build up.
It is a deserved win for the Bhoys who were absolutely brilliant throughout the game. Brendan Rodgers has come under pressure after some recent poor results but he will be very happy with this result and the win.
McGregor was outstanding and the goal from Kyogo was out of the world. The Japan international has made it a habit of scoring against Rangers every time, and he scored another beauty with his weaker left foot.
