Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou is keen on adding a new winger to his squad this winter as they eye a move for Al-Ittihad’s Jota, according to The Telegraph.
The duo had a successful stint together at Celtic where they won five trophies including the Scottish title. While Postecoglou left to join Tottenham, Jota switched to join Al Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League but has been out of favor at the club since then.
The Telegraph claims that Spurs are seeking a loan move for Jota and it is unclear if Al-Ittihad will demand a significant fee for the winger.
Tottenham’s captain, Son Heung-Min will depart for the Asia Cup with South Korea and will miss up to four Premier League matches between January and February.
His potential absence has accelerated Spurs’ effort to find a winger, as Spurs aim to get Jota on loan this January.
Despite being out of Favour in the Saudi Pro League, Jota still has a long contract at the King Abdullah Sports City that runs until June 2026.
90min claims that sources have told them Spurs are “confident of finding an agreement with Al Ittihad to take the winger on an initial loan with a purchase clause”.
Spurs keen on Jota
Jota’s remarkable contribution during his time at Celtic included 28 goals and 26 assists in 83 matches across various competitions.
This stellar performance played a pivotal role in Celtic securing two Scottish Premiership titles, one Scottish Cup, and two Scottish League Cups. However, despite their shared success, Postecoglou and Jota parted ways in the summer. Postecoglou moved on to become the new manager of Tottenham, while Jota took an unexpected turn by joining Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad.
He is a class player, and UEFA described his assist against Ferencváros in the Europa League in 2022 as “sensational”.
Jota’s transfer to Al Ittihad has encountered complications. Limited to eight foreign players, he faced exclusion from the league squad after featuring in five matches. As a result, Jota’s playing time has been restricted to AFC Champions League and club World Cup matches, amassing a total of 517 minutes and scoring two goals this season.
Facing these challenges, strong indications suggest that Jota is contemplating an early departure from Al Ittihad. Tottenham are actively engaged in discussions about a potential signing on the wings and the 24-year-old is reportedly open to reuniting with his former boss.
