Tottenham eye move for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign a new defender in the January transfer window, and they have earmarked Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez as a possible option, according to a report from the Daily Mail

Spurs are lacking depth at the back at the moment, and they have suffered a massive blow this week. Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Cristian Romero will require up to five weeks to recover from a hamstring strain.

With Micky van de Ven also out, it leaves Postecoglou to work with Eric Dier and Emerson Royal as two senior options to partner Ben Davies in the heart of the back-four.

The north London club desperately need reinforcement at the back, and they have lined up targets like Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice, Lloyd Kelly of Bournemouth, Genoa’s Radu Dragusin, and Gomez.

Impossible to sign

Gomez is an experienced Premier League player but it is unthinkable that Liverpool will sell their prized asset to Spurs. He is at £85k-per-week wages at Anfield and has won one Premier League and a Champions League title under Jurgen Klopp.

He is a versatile defender who can play at right-back and can also fill in at left-back if needed.

However, the Reds are going through a crisis at the back. Joel Matip is out injured for the rest of the season with an ACL tear and Klopp has limited options.

At the same time, Liverpool have lost two left-backs, Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, through injuries, and Gomez will have to play at left-back. In such a scenario, it is unthinkable that Spurs can get Gomez at a decent price. Liverpool won’t sell him.

Tottenham should look at other options. Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah can be a good option and the Blues are likely to sell him as well. Everton defender Ben Godfrey could be another option for Spurs as well.
