Tottenham Hotspur are desperate to sign a new defender in the January transfer window and they have been heavily linked with OGC Nice defender, Jean-Clair Todibo in the past weeks.
Ange Postecoglou previously highlighted the need for defensive reinforcements following a hamstring injury to Christian Romero, ruling him out for up to five weeks.
Summer signing, Micky van de Ven is also facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines having suffered an injury in the 4-1 loss to Chelsea, leaving Spurs short of options at centre-back.
This was made evident in the loss to Brighton where Emerson Royal and Ben Davies who are two natural full-backs, were both fielded as centre-backs.
In a bid to accelerate efforts to sign a new defender, Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth has given an update on Tottenham’s effort to sign Todibo who appears to be high on Spurs list.
“I think the central defensive position is something that Tottenham will want to look at,” reported Sheth.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk Podcast, Sheth revealed that there is a “strong interest” from Tottenham for The France International.
He added “The player that they have been linked with and there seems to be a strong interest in is Jean-Clair Todibo from Nice”
Sheth also spoke at length about another strong interest from Premier League rivals, Manchester United who are also showing interest in the player and may pose a significant advantage due to ties between Nice and prospective United’s owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
He reported that there’s also that connection now and Manchester United have also been interested in Todibo in the last transfer window.
“I think he possibly was one of the players they were looking at should Harry Maguire have left.
“We all know what happened there, Harry Maguire ended up staying, and Todibo ended up staying at Nice.
“But, you’ve also now got that connection with INEOS with the ownership at Nice being INEOS and them now having a 25% stake in Manchester United.”
The Lilywhites will need to be wary of United’s pursuit of the 21-year-old and will need to accelerate efforts to seal the transfer of the defender who is rated at £40m.
Spurs have been checking on other targets as well, and Liverpool’s Joe Gomez has come up as a potential option. Tottenham are also checking on players like Radu Dragusin among others.
