Tottenham Hotspur are looking to bolster their defence in the January transfer window and they are keen to sign Chelsea centre-back, Trevor Chalobah, according to a report from Team Talk.
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has already stressed the need to sign a new defender next month, and the north London club have been linked with a host of players already.
The 24-year-old has been targeted by Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, but Spurs are looking more active in the race to secure his signature. They have already made contact with Chalobah’s representatives about a move to north London.
Chelsea have spent over £1 billion since Todd Boehly took over but the Blues are still looking to spend heavily to bolster the squad. Some new faces are expected to arrive but for that they are looking to ship out unwanted players.
Meanwhile, it has been reported in Italy that AS Roma have reached an agreement over the potential transfer of Chalobah. Italian outlet Il Romanista, as cited and translated by Sport Witness, claimed that Roma’s club’s director Tiago Pinto has secured an agreement for the player.
Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has given the green light already for the transfer to go through.
Need for a new centre-back
Spurs lacked depth in the centre-back region, and they felt the need for a top-quality centre-back after the injury to Micky van de Ven. Cristian Romero continues to divide opinion among the fans and pundits, but he is still a key player for the club.
Ben Davies has done well alongside him, but Eric Dier has been disappointing. In all probability, Dier will be sold by Postecoglou at some point, which means, the club must look to buy one quality defender.
Chalobah probably would love to continue in the Premier League, and a move to Spurs could appeal to him. He has made 63 first-team appearances and signed a long-term deal in November 2022.
