Trevoh Chalobah offered escape route away from Chelsea as Roma signify loan interest

Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah is attracting loan interest from Serie A outfit AS Roma, according to Sky Sport Italia.

Chalobah, who is yet to play a single minute this term, has been sidelined since the first week of August with a long-term thigh injury which he picked up on pre-season duty.

The acquisition of Axel Disasi and the return of Levi Colwill from his loan spell at Brighton & Hove Albion has further pushed Chalobah down the pecking order and the 24-year-old is largely expected to leave Stamford Bridge soon.

Chelsea are looking to balance the books off the back of yet another huge spending spree last summer and in anticipation of January additions as hinted by head coach Mauricio Pochettino earlier this month.

Chalobah was linked with a move away from his current employers last summer as Bayern Munich and Nottingham Forest emerged as potential destinations at different stages of the window, but his ill-timed injury woes put off any suitors.

While Roma are now looking to snap up the Englishman on a short-term basis, Jose Mourinho’s men are still concerned about his long-term fitness as they are currently dealing with an injury crisis of their own.

First-choice centre-backs Chris Smalling and Marash Kumbulla are currently sidelined and Roma could certainly do with defensive reinforcement in January having conceded the most goals in the top half of the Serie A table after the first 16 rounds of matches.

However, I Giallorossi will have to fend off competition from Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur in their pursuit of Chalobah, who still has four-and-a-half years on his Chelsea deal.

Chalobah could become the second Chelsea player to join Roma on loan this term, following in the footsteps of Romelu Lukaku, who has made a good impact in his time at Stadio Olimpico so far.
