Arsenal intensify talks to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana

Arsenal are intensifying talks to secure the signing of Everton midfielder, Amadou Onana, according to journalist Sacha Tavolieri.

The Gunners’ boss Mikel Arteta is keen on improving his midfield ranks following Thomas Partey’s incessant injury concerns that have kept him out for most of the season.

This has left Declan Rice as the only recognizable defensive midfielder in the squad with Mohamed Elneny leaving for the African Cup of Nations. Hence, The Gunners have now set their sights on Belgium International, Onana as a viable option in the holding midfield role.

Amid Interest from overseas clubs, Tavolieri reports that Arsenal and Everton are locked in talks with the Belgium International whose priority is to remain in the Premier League. The report adds that the 22-year-old is also keen on the move to The Emirates Stadium as things could develop quickly.

Onana is currently in his second season at Goodison Park. With 18 months remaining in his contract, Everton will hope to recoup significant profit from the £33m they paid Lille to acquire him in 2022.

Onana would be a top signing for Arsenal

Onana has emerged as one of the most combative midfielders in the Premier League since his switch from Lille last season.

He is one of the best-performing players in Sean Dyche’s squad this season, making 21 appearances in what seems to be a difficult season for Everton following their 10-point deduction.

While Everton will be hoping to recoup a significant high fee, Arsenal on the other hand will hope to negotiate a modest fee as they believe Everton’s precarious financial situation should give room for an open negotiation.

If the Belgium secures a move to Arsenal, it is perceived he will partner Declan Rice in midfield who will then be allowed to advance a bit and roam the pitch while still offering defensive solidity for his side.

Meanwhile, Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup by Liverpool after failing to find the back of the net following a myriad of chances. The move for a midfielder raises questions over Arsenal’s priority as they desperately need a lethal striker to finish off their chances.
