Bayern Munich reach verbal agreement for Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier

Newcastle United full-back Kieran Tripper remains a Plan B standby option for Bayern Munich, according to Florian Plettenberg

The German giants are looking to sign a right-back this month, and they have earmarked the 33-year-old as a potential option.

Craig Hope wrote for The Daily Mail that Tripper is seen as an integral part of Eddie Howe’s plans and is seen as an “invaluable” member of the squad.

It has been suggested that the Magpies, who have badly struggled with injuries this season, will resist all approach from Bayern.

Plettenberg says that a “verbal agreement” has been reached between Bayern and Tripper. The right-back is keen to play in the Bundesliga with the German giants, and Bayern are in contact with Newcastle over a possible transfer.

Fabrizio Romano earlier suggested that Nordi Mukiele remains a favourite target for Bayern, but it seems Trippier is more a realistic target for them.

Big decision

The decision now rests with Newcastle whether they would stick with Tripper or sell him. The England full-back is an influential player at the club and losing him will be a massive blow.

At the same time, he is not getting younger, and it is also a fantastic opportunity to get him off the wage bill.

The problem for Newcastle is that Javier Manquillo is also leaving the club this month. He is expected to complete a move to Celta Vigo.

Eddie Howe will have the likes of Tino Livramento and Emil Kraft at his disposal, but he will definitely look to sign a new defender if Trippier leaves.
