Everton are showing keen interest in signing Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka in the January window, according to Ed Aarons.
The Guardian journalist wrote on X that the 26-year-old midfielder signed a new contract in the summer, and he would cost more than £20m.
The Toffees could face competition from Premier League rivals Fulham. He is a “dynamic” defensive midfielder who has made six starts in the Premier League this season, while a further 10 appearances have come from the bench.
The Nigeria international has been fairly regular for the club since joining them two years back. Last season, he made 21 appearances in the Premier League.
Aarons says that Brentford could try to sign Morocco’s Azzedine Ounahi if he leaves the club.
“Understand that Everton and Fulham are among the clubs who are interested in signing Brentford’s Frank Onyeka this month. The Nigeria midfielder signed a new contract in the summer and would cost more than £20m. Brentford could try to sign Morocco’s Azzedine Ounahi if he goes,” wrote Aarons.
Replacement for Onana?
It has been well documented that the Toffees have financial problems. They have been docked 10 points and are fighting for survival.
There are some suggestions that the Toffees could face further punishment for breaching the Financial Fair Play rules. In such a scenario, it’s hard to see the club spending over £20m for a midfielder, when at best they can sign anyone on loan in January.
Sean Dyche has done a remarkable job since taking charge of the club and one doesn’t fail to see the progress the club has made in such a short time.
He would love to have one or two new players to the squad but the reality is Everton cannot go out in the market and make costly signings.
In recent weeks, the future of Amadou Onana has come under intense speculation. The likes of Arsenal and Chelsea are keen to sign the Belgium international who would cost in the region of £60m.
If Everton manage to offload him in January, Dyche will have some money to reinvest into the squad, and in that scenario, they could move for Onyeka.
