Everton battle Crystal Palace for Chuba Akpom

Everton are looking to add at least one new player in the closing stages of the January transfer window, according to journalist Ryan Taylor

The Toffees are struggling financially to make new signings, but the club is looking to secure a late loan deal for Akpom before the February 1 deadline.

The Daily Mirror journalist claims that “sources say” that Everton are likely to come up with a loan bid rather than making a permanent offer.

The Toffees could face competition from Luton Town and Crystal Palace for the signature of the 28-year-old striker.

Clubs in the Bundesliga are also interested in signing him. Ajax have already rejected a loan bid from French club Lille for Akpom.

“Everton, Luton & Crystal Palace considering late moves for Chuba Akpom. Sources say loan proposals are likelier than permanent bids. Lille have already seen one bid rejected by Ajax earlier in window. Interest from Bundesliga also,” wrote Taylor on X.

Good move?

Akpom started his youth career with Arsenal but he didn’t shine with the Gunners. He managed only 12 appearances for the senior side before he moved to Greece club PAOK. He has played across loads of clubs in England including Brentford, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City and Brighton on loan.

He proved to be a huge success with Middlesborough where he managed 34 goals in 82 games.

This season, he has scored nine goals in 23 appearances for Ajax, and now several clubs are vying for his signature.

Everton have suffered a lot this season. They were docked off 10 points and they could face further punishments, but the way they have kept on fighting under Sean Dyche is remarkable.

Amadou Onana, their star player, was linked with a move away from the club this month but no club has come up with a formal bid to sign him.
